FINDING SOLUTIONS FOR CALIFORNIANS FARMING WITH INJURIES & DISABILITIES
The University of California-Davis California AgrAbility Program’s mission is to promote independence in farming and rural living for people with injuries, disabilities, and illnesses. To accomplish the mission, California AgrAbility provides bilingual (English and Spanish) service capacity through innovative educational programs designed to advance individual capabilities, adapt new technologies, and deliver program content through appropriate educational venues. Program staff conduct workshops and seminars for health, rehabilitation, and other professionals on rehabilitating farmers and workers.
The California AgrAbility Program provides direct services to farmers and agricultural workers through individual consultations, farm site assessments, safety evaluations, and case management. This technical assistance varies based on the injury and/or disability of each individual and family. Staff help identify and locate resources including low-cost modifications to the farm, home, equipment and work site operations. Even though funds cannot be given directly to agricultural families, we help find solutions to challenges. Other resources include: assistive technologies research, health care and rehabilitation services, and advocacy with government and non-profit agencies for farmers and workers.
The California AgrAbility Program collaborative approach encourages an environment with priorities in occupational safety and champions prevention of secondary injury in farmer and farmworker communities.
